Letting Her Guard Down in Haiti

Westchase resident Wendy Denbo went to Haiti on her second mission trip recently. This time she was able to slow down and take in all the country had to offer.

Editor's Note: Yesterday we featured recent trip to Haiti with the People for Haiti non-profit. It was her fifth trip to the country. Today we Denbo's sister Wendy shares her experience in the country.

My first trip to Haiti was very eye opening to the point that most of my time was spent in shock.  On my second trip, I knew what to expect on my journey. During this trip, I had to spend less time trying to figure out what I should do and where I should be. Instead, I was able to just be there, let my guard down and wrap my arms around as many children as I could. The most wonderful thing about Haiti is the people.  Even though they have been through a lot of tragedy, they greet strangers with open arms.  In America, it is typical for children to be closed off and weary of strangers.  In Haiti, the children enjoy being able to crawl into your lap and fall asleep in your loving arms.  This is the reason I will keep coming back to Haiti.
