GA Coronavirus: 1,097 Cases, 38 Deaths Tallied In Update

GEORGIA — The number of people who have tested positive for the new coronavirus continued to climb Tuesday evening, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health.

As of 7 p.m. Tuesday, there have been 1,097 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Georgia and 38 deaths resulting from the illness. In addition, 361 people have been hospitalized.

The number of confirmed and presumed positive cases of COVID-19 rose from Tuesday morning's 1,026 positive cases and 38 deaths.

All told, the state has tested 5,484 Georgians. Of those, 4,106 were completed in a commercial lab, and 907 of the commercial lab tests came back positive.

"Today's significant increase in cases is in part reflective of improvement in electronic reporting efficiency from commercial laboratories," the Georgia Department of Public Health said Monday. "These reports often have sparse patient data and DPH will be working to complete these records, so data will change over time."

In a news conference Monday afternoon, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp announced all bars and nightclubs will close, banned groups of more than 10 people and issued a shelter-in-place for those who are "medically fragile" until April 6.

Businesses and grocery stores that allow patrons to maintain a six-foot social distance are allowed to remain open.

Fulton County has the most cases in the state with 184, followed by Dekalb with 94, Dougherty with 90, Cobb with 86, Bartow with 75, Gwinnett with 45, Cherokee with 28, Carroll with 26, Clayton with 21, Lee with 20, Clarke with 16 and Hall with 14.
