200 Year Age Old Sabiston Family Cemetery, Morehead City, NC
New Granite Bench / Replacement of Old Wooden Markers

The Sabiston Family, on June 6, 2025, at the Greenwood Cemetery, Morehead City, NC did a dedication of a new Granite Bench to honor their ancestor’s buried in the 200 year old family cemetery. The grave markers were made out of wood and were rotting and were replaced with new wooden markers. The old wooden grave markers had little or no Information on them like date of birth or death and how they were related. The Sabiston's feel by having a granite bench with all the right information on it would honor the ancestor.
The Sabistons would like to say special thanks to Dee Lewis of History Museum of Carteret County for all his research help and for confirming our family history and to Nick Cunningham of the Morehead City Public Service Department for his help at City Hall to get this new bench and new wooden grave markers all approved!
Also, a very special thank you to family member Chris Sabiston for making all the new wooden markers for all of the ancestors.
To give you a Little History on this Sabiston Family Cemetery here... it was Robert Sabiston Family Property where he was buried in1834 along with his wife, Rebecca Adams, Sabiston in 1884.
The first person to be buried there was Robert’s Father, Captain David Simons Sabiston, in 1811. David Sabiston was the Captain of his own Schooner called the Rose which he purchased in 1785 during the American Revolution and sailed into Beaufort carring supplies to the colonists during that time. David Sabiston was born in the Orkney Islands, Scotland in 1736. David arrived in Beaufort, NC around 1760 at the age 24 with his older brother John and married Nancy Piner in 1775 and they had several children, their first was Robert Sabiston in 1784. David and Nancy Sabiston owned and built the original Sabiston House on Ann Street in 1782 which is the first of four Sabiston homes in the down town area of Beaufort, NC.
