Alpharetta To Host Free Program About Bats
A new program about these animals habits will be held Saturday, Sept. 15 at Mansell House at Wills Park.

ALPHARETTA, GA — Have you ever wanted to learn more about bats, those elusive mammals that only come into the minds of most residents through television or the movies? Well, if these animals stimulate your interest, then the city of Alpharetta has the perfect program for you and your curious intellect.
The city and the Alpharetta Natural Resources Commission will host this new program on bats from 6:30 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15 at Mansell House in Wills Park.
Presenters Dr. Jackie Belwood of Georgia Highlands College and Dennis Krusac with the U.S. Forest Service will introduce you to facts about these animals with a hands-on interactive exhibit. Both are experts in teaching about nature and conservation.

The evening begins with an exhibit, which will include activities for kids. Children will have a chance to pose as bat biologists, and identify various species of toy bats using a key and ruler. Then, sit back and enjoy a PowerPoint presentation about bats: where they live, what they eat, how we benefit from them, the challenges they face, and what you can do to help them.

Bats come out at dusk so the evening will conclude with a hike outdoors to view and listen. Bat echolocation calls are ultrasonic meaning they are so high-pitched we can’t hear them; but, with special bat detectors we will be able to listen to the calls as they navigate and feed.
This is a free, family friendly program. Bat attire is encouraged for the fun factor. Bringing a small flashlight, water bottle, and bug spray is advisable.
