Brunch Bill Goes Into Effect Nov. 25 In Milton

Milton leaders ratified the results of the Nov. 6 election, which included approval for restaurants to sell alcohol at 11 a.m. on Sundays.

MILTON, GA — Residents who are brunching in Milton and want to have a mimosa or Bloody Mary to accompany those Eggs Benedict will soon be able to order those drinks a little earlier.

The Milton City Council at its Monday, Nov. 19 meeting ratified the Nov. 6 election results certified by Fulton County, which included the approval of the city's Brunch Bill referendum. The local referendum was passed by Milton voters during the recent election, and the Milton City Council adopted the local ordinance necessary to implement the Brunch Bill. The new hours will go into effect beginning at 11 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, the city said.

Senate Bill 17, known as the Brunch Bill or Mimosa Mandate, was passed by the Georgia General Assembly earlier this year, clearing the way for local referendums to determine whether restaurants and wineries could begin selling alcohol at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

One word of caution: this does not apply to alcohol sales for retailers — only establishments that make at least 50 percent of their revenue from food sales.

Milton is one of over 45 metro Atlanta cities and counties that voted in favor of the Brunch Bill. The bill also passed in neighboring jurisdictions Sandy Springs, Roswell, Johns Creek, and Alpharetta.

According to the city, the Georgia Restaurant Association predicts that the extra 90 minutes will lead to nearly $500 in revenue, per restaurant, per Sunday equaling an estimated $26,000 increase in revenue in a calendar year per restaurant.
