Feedback Sought For New Name For Former Milton Country Club

MILTON, GA — For the past four years, it’s been called the former Milton Country Club. That was a placeholder name if there ever was one, hardly befitting this beautiful, inviting 137-acre property in the heart of Milton. This was the city’s signature greenspace purchase, already serves an active sports hub, and has a well-planned future to become even more vital, and beloved, in the community.

And it won’t be the former Milton Country Club for much longer.

Citizens have a say in what this property’s new, permanent name will be, starting now. Email all suggestions, and why, to nameourparks@cityofmiltonga.us.

The public’s ideas will be accepted, via the aforementioned email address, as well as through the city’s Facebook page, through 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13. City staff will sift through proposals, to identify commonly identified and standout options, as well as to solicit the opinion of stakeholders and others with unique perspectives. The plan is for city staff to present three to five alternatives for Milton’s City Council to consider when it meets the evening of Monday, April 25.

Already, its seven “active” acres contains the city pool, Milton Tennis Center, and clubhouse that is in the finishing stages of being transformed into a recreation and community center. The remaining 130 acres were purchased using part of the voter-approved $25 million green space bond fund, meaning it cannot feature large buildings or traditional athletic programming. Instead, the former golf course has been reimagined as a nature preserve. In fact, crews are working now on the first of what could be many trails there. The hope is that the trail and the new community center will be open when the city hosts its Earth Day celebration on the property on Saturday, April 23.

This property will be the first of several that the city plans to name over the next few years. In each case, the name should offer clarity to visitors, reflect the city’s values and identity, as well as resonate with citizens. Others in the immediate pipeline include the park with the pond and pier off Mayfield Road and the Cox Road athletic facility, which should have its grass fields turfed over in the coming months.
