Here are the top stories today in Alpharetta-Milton:

  1. Mark your calendar for Oct. 1 at 11 a.m., when Geraldine Brooks, the bestselling author of six novels and two acclaimed nonfiction works, will be discussing her new novel, “Horse,” at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center, 950 Forrest St. Roswell Reads, in partnership with the Roswell Cultural Arts Center, is kicking off National Arts & Humanities Month with an in-person presentation by Australian-born Brooks. She began her career in journalism, eventually working as a foreign correspondent for The Wall Street Journal, where she covered crises in the Middle East, Africa and the Balkans. (Roswell Reads)
  2. On Friday, the city proudly welcomed Poe & Company bookstore to the Milton business community! Poe & Company is located at 1890 Heritage Walk (Suite 101) in Crabapple Market. It is an independent bookstore with a whimsical, refreshing and inviting atmosphere.
Owner Kate Seng is thrilled to open the store in her very own community (she's a Milton resident) and looks forward to hosting exciting events such as book clubs, children's reading groups, summer reading clubs, new author events, book signings and Bible study groups. Be sure to stop in Poe & Company for a delicious cup of coffee and find your next favorite read! (City of Milton)
  3. Halloween is fast-approaching, and Milton is about to get SCARY! Thursday is the last day for would-be young monsters — and, to become truly monstrous, singers and actors — to sign-up to be part of the Milton Arts Council's upcoming musical production of, you guessed it, "We Are Monsters." The show is open to children in grades three through eight. (City of Milton)

Today in Alpharetta-Milton:

  • Fulton County Board of Registration & Elections will be holding a special called meeting and immediately enter an executive session to address personnel matters; the meeting is open to the public. It will take place from 8:30 a.m.– 5:30 p.m. The Board plans to discuss no elections business or hear public comments during this time. Alpharetta and Milton residents can attend the meeting in person or remotely. (Fulton County)
  • Learn about voting for the upcoming election at the Milton Library, 855 Mayfield Road, from 1-3 p.m. The Fulton County Voter Education and Outreach will make a presentation covering upcoming elections, early voting, how to obtain an absentee ballot and register to vote. Additional topics covered will be acceptable identification at the polls and Georgia Voter Identification cards. (Milton Library)
  • There will be a Social Security Workshop at the Milton Library today from 6-7 p.m. Social Security provides not only a guaranteed income stream but also longevity protection, spousal protection, and some inflation protection. It may be the closest thing you receive to a traditional pension. Whether you're single, married, divorced, or widowed, there may be ways to maximize the lifetime Social Security benefits you receive. The concepts discussed in this course are most suitable for those with investable assets of $100,000 or more. (Milton Library)

From my notebook:

  • On Friday, the folks at Jackson Healthcare welcomed firefighters from Alpharetta Fire to participate in a memorial ceremony honoring the memories of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice on Sept. 11, 2001. After the tribute, the kids from the onsite day care had the opportunity to check out the ladder truck. It was great to meet everyone and stand united in honoring the lives lost. (City of Alpharetta)
  • Many baseball sluggers dream of having eyes like a hawk — an expression for very good eyesight. But how many hawks dream of hitting a baseball? Perhaps (or more likely not) that was what was going through the mind of a hawk that got into the batting cage at Bell Memorial Park in Milton last Thursday. Thankfully, workers from the City’s partners at Tri Scapes were able to spot, extricate and ultimately — and safely — set free their new feathered friend. (City of Milton)
  • Be sure to join the Alpharetta Chamber of Commerce at Fogon and Lions, 10 Roswell St. in Alpharetta, for this month's The Wednesday Social, an evening of social networking with your local businesses. To register, visit the chamber's website or pay at the door.
