Can you give me some background on your business? When did it open? If it's a restaurant, what would you consider your specialties?
Leg Up Recovery is an athletic wellness center that opened in February 2022. We offer services including whole body cryotherapy, localized cryotherapy, cryofacials, compression therapy, electrical muscle stimulation therapy, and percussive therapy. We offer athletic recovery by athletes for athletes.
Why did you want to open a business?
I've always wanted to help people. I became a pharmacist so that I could work in medicine and provide help to patients, however, I quickly realized that I wasn't helping as many people as I could. I wanted to leave a mark and create something new that was mine. I've been competing in athletics since I was 4 and always have thought athletic recovery was an area that was highly disregarded by almost every type of business. I wanted to create a space that athletes would want to come to that would also help them in their respective sports. With the background that I have, I started researching what I could do with this idea and Leg Up Recovery was born.
What has been the best part of owning your own business?
The best part has been getting outside of my comfort zone to learn about a new niche area. Opening a business has become more and more rare, especially a business that isn't a known franchise. I love the challenge of building something and always getting to be working at something.
What has been the worst part of owning your own business?
The worst part is there is a lot of things that are just unknown. There are people to help you but you have to really look for those people. There's not a how-to on a lot of this and even people that can help you don't know everything. The worst thing is the laws are deliberately vague and hidden which can lead to a lot of anxiety surrounding if you've done everything correctly.
What's a fact about your business that most customers probably don't know?
Both owners were avid athletes in college and are both under 30-years-old.
How has the pandemic affected your business?
The pandemic created the business. I truly believe that had I not been working as a pharmacist during the pandemic, I would not have quit that job to pursue something less stressful.
How have you had to adapt during the pandemic? What changes did you make?
Since we opened directly after the pandemic, we are more dealing with getting people back acclimated to walking in to stores again and re-engaging.
What do you think is your secret to staying in business during the pandemic?
Adaptability. But that is also true for every aspect of business. If you cannot be adaptable, you will not succeed. This world is always changing and bringing new challenges to business owners, and we have to change right along with it.
Has the need for workers had an effect on your business? How so?
When I first posted job listings about my business, I actually got a pretty high click rate because I was offering more than minimum wage. I do not believe there is a huge downfall of people wanting to work, I think that there are just more businesses now unable to hire because they won't pay more than minimum wage.
What's your favorite thing about the Patch town your business is located in?
Alpharetta is great, there's always things going on. I love the amount of small businesses in the area and all the events that happen.
How has the community supported your business over the years?
I'm hoping to get community support as I grow into this area.
What sets your business apart from others?
The main difference between Leg Up Recovery and other cryotherapy places is we are solely interested in athletic recovery and wellness. Many of the other places focus on beauty but we want to really be the place that athletes go to get therapy.
