Here are the top three stories today in Alpharetta-Milton:

  1. An Alpharetta man was assaulted outside his home in the Avalon Development. Police said the victim walked out of his own garage around 10:00 p.m. on South Esplanade when he saw two people having intercourse. When he confronted them, the man took off his belt and swung it at the resident's face multiple times causing lacerations, swelling, and partial memory loss. The victim was transported to the hospital, and police were given limited information on the suspect after the victim's memory recovered. (Appen Media)
  2. The Atlanta Humane Society in Alpharetta is closing and selling the property to build a new facility. The change comes partly from the ability to sell their property for above market value, but also because they want to have an updated facility that can better serve the pets and community in North Fulton County. The facility will close on Jun. 19, but the Humane Society will still offer robust adoption, fostering, and volunteering opportunities for the county. While planning the new facility, the Humane Society will be looking for public input on the specific needs they have before building their new location. (WSBTV via MSN)
  3. The Fulton County Commission is considering a permanent extension of a contract for the health provider that many say caused an inmate's death in the Fulton County Jail. Lashawn Thompson died in jail due to malnourishment and neglect, where they found his body and cell covered with insects. The county sheriff said that the health care provider, NaphCare, is to blame for the death and that he would work to end the contract. However, the county commission met last Wednesday to discuss the terms of a new contract with the provider, which would include 13 more staff and requires the county to pay for HIV and Hepatitis C medication. The contract also grants the county immunity from medical malpractice. (11Alive.com WXIA)
