Milton To Celebrate Earth Day On April 22

Earth Day will be celebrated in Milton with activities and workshops about nature for all ages.

From The City of Milton: Help the City of Milton, along with event sponsors Whole Foods, Home Depot and Scottsdale Farms, celebrate Earth Day by joining us on the new Milton City Hall Plaza for a day filled with fun, learning, and serving for all ages. The celebration will be held on April 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Kids can build a Home Depot bird feeder and make other fun crafts from recycled materials. Zoologist Jim Nark will be on hand with amphibians, reptiles, arachnids, insects, and mammals for an entertaining and educational experience for children and adults alike.

In addition, green classes will be offered to help residents learn ways to "make every day Earth Day." The classes--Rain Barrel Workshop and How to Make Your Own Green Cleaning Products--will be held in Community Place, the new community building on the Plaza adjacent to City Hall. Since these are hands-on workshops with take-home materials, workshops may have limited participation and/or require pre-registration.

Earth Day attendees will also take home a free tree seedling for planting, courtesy of the National Wildlife Federation (NWF). Milton staff will also be available to assist anyone interested in certifying their backyard as a NWF Wildlife Habitat.

"This year's event has a bit of a different feel, we're focusing on fun activities that promote environmental education and emphasize sustainability," said Teresa Stickels Milton's sustainability coordinator. "There's something for everyone at the event."

New for Milton's 8th Annual Earth Day, environmental service opportunities will be available at multiple locations during the event. Volunteers are needed to plant trees at Bell Memorial Park, perform trail maintenance at Providence Park, and help restore a butterfly habitat by planting a pollinator garden at Bell Memorial. These projects are made possible through generous donations of supplies and materials by Scottsdale Farms and Casey Tree Experts.

Service project volunteers may sign up ahead of time by contacting Stickels at teresa.stickels@cityofmiltonga.us or simply show up at the park locations noted from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on April 22. Volunteers are encouraged to dress for working outside and bring work gloves.

"With our new location in the heart of Crabapple, we're encouraging everyone to pack a picnic lunch and dine at a table on the City Hall Plaza or venture out to one of the many area restaurants for lunch," said Courtney Spriggs event coordinator and Milton's community engagement manager.
