Here are the top stories in Alpharetta-Milton today:

  1. Are you looking for some unique holiday gifts? Head out to Milton's Holiday Market next Wednesday, Dec. 7 at Milton City Hall. The event will run from 3-6:30 p.m. and will feature "well-crafted products and hand-made delicacies that (due warning!) may prove hard to resist." It is being run by the same group behind the Milton Farmers Market in Crabapple. (City of Milton)
  2. Please join us tonight for the lighting of the Alpharetta Christmas tree on the Town Green at 6:30 p.m. In addition, there will be hot chocolate party with Nutcracker characters. Please bring a nonperishable food item for a North Fulton Charities food drive. This fun filled event will be the first holiday celebration in a series taking place the first three Fridays in December. (City of Alpharetta)
  3. Earlier this week, Cambridge High School received a hoax call about a shooting. Someone called 911, claimed to be a teacher and heard shots being fired in the school. The Milton Police contacted the school and did a sweep while keeping the students in their classrooms. They found no evidence of shots being fired. Other schools in Georgia received similar calls this week, which were all hoaxes. (City of Milton)
  4. The McConnell-Chadwick House in Milton is at risk for being torn down due to significant structural issues. This property, located along Arnold Mill Road, was built in 1835 and has historical significance. It was one of the earliest structures in Cherokee County, and "is also noted for its architectural design, a Greek revival design with a long porch and fluted door columns." The Milton Historical Society has been exploring a possible use for this building, including restoring it as a home, museum, or welcome center. (Appen)

From my notebook:

  • A lucky wounded owl on the side of Mayfield Road in Milton was rescued by City of Milton Firefighter/EMT Agata Sarkis. She spotted the bird one morning, and it had a wounded wing. She then brought it to Station 41 off Arnold Mill Road and contacted the Chattahoochee Nature Center in Roswell. The Nature Center asked her to bring it to Veterinary Emergency Group in Alpharetta so it could be quarantined before someone picked it up. Luckily, the owl stayed calm and didn't try to fly out of her car! (City of Milton, Georgia - Government via Facebook)
  • Many students at Cogburn Woods Elementary School were given student of the month awards. They were rewarded for having self-management. This means they had strenghts regarding emotions and had positive interactions with adults and other students. (Cogburn Woods Elementary School PTO via Facebook)
  • If you're planning to walk on the Alpharetta Greenway, please note that the Marconi entrance is temporarily closed. Updates will be provided as they are available. Thank you for your patience and understanding. (City of Alpharetta Recreation, Parks, Cultural Services via Facebook)
