Here are the top stories today in Alpharetta-Milton:

  1. Milton residents can help pick the name of a new park at the corner of Freemanville and Birmingham roads. "The City bought this largely flat, grassy area in April 2019 using $1.4 million in funds from the $25 million greenspace bond that voters overwhelmingly approved 2½ years earlier. After studies and discussions on what to do next, in 2022 the City undertook relatively small-scale changes aimed at enhancing the property’s best attributes, serving the equestrian community, while optimizing its safety and aesthetic appeal." (City of Milton)
  2. Good news for Georgia residents — representatives of water supply systems in Gwinnett, Forsyth and Hall counties finalized an agreement with the state Monday guaranteeing them water from Lake Lanier through 2050. The long-term deal, first announced last month, closes the chapter on a major portion of the tri-state “water wars” between Georgia, Florida, and Alabama going back to the 1990s. “This landmark agreement is the final step in a 30-year-long process to secure water rights for Lake Lanier,” Gov. Brian Kemp declared during a ceremony at the state Capitol. “For our growing population and job creators, this is a crucial asset.” The water wars originated when the U.S. Army Corp s of Engineers dammed the Chattahoochee River to form Lake Lanier in the 1950s. conclusion.” (GPB)
  3. Hurricane Ian is moving towards Alpharetta and Milton. Rain is expected to start here on Friday and continue through Saturday. Wind gusts of 39 mph are possible. Georgia has already activated its operation center where it will coordinate efforts both before and after Ian makes landfall. (ANF)

From my notebook:

  • Milton firefighters have said goodbye to one of their own. "Walker Mann served honorably in the City of Milton Fire Department for six years before his departure in 2017. He was well-liked, well-respected, hard-working, and dedicated to making a difference in our community — something he did every day while with the City and that he continued to do after leaving the payroll while working with Milton's contract EMS provider. We send our heartfelt condolences to his wife and family." (City of Milton, Georgia - Government via Facebook)
  • The Alpharetta Mayor's Corporate Challenge is this Thursday! "Lace up your shoes and join us on Thursday, Sept. 29 in beautiful downtown Alpharetta for an incredible night of Fun, Running, Friendly Competition and Fundraising to benefit the local and international charities supported by Alpharetta Rotary. 2022 marks the 39th anniversary of the Rotary Club of Alpharetta and the 25th running of the Mayor’s Corporate Challenge. Race Festivities and Expo begin at 5 p.m., Kids Fun Run starts at 6 p.m., 5K starts at 6:30 p.m." (Rotary Club of Alpharetta via Facebook)
  • There is still time to sign up for Alpharetta youth basketball! Registration is open until Oct. 9. There are programs for boys and girls. (City of Alpharetta Recreation, Parks, Cultural Services via Facebook)
