Here are the top stories today in Alpharetta-Milton:

  1. A man found in a pool of blood in a Roswell park is recovering; he is off a ventilator and is able to speak. Police are still trying to piece together what happened to Matthew Donald, who suffered a frontal brain injury and is on heavy medications as he recovers. "His father said he thinks it may be a few weeks before Matthew can fully recount what occurred the night of the attack." (11 Alive)
  2. Alpharetta Avalon will be hosting an Oktoberfest celebration Oct. 1. The event will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Its main street will be turned into a beer hall, featuring outdoor games and pop-up stations from some of the community’s restaurants. "Don your lederhosen or dirndl and grab your friends as we celebrate with music, dancing, specialty bites, brews, and more!" Tickets are $15 and can be found here. (CBS 46 News)
  3. Milton's City Council approved its next fiscal year budget, and $300,000 will be allocated towards a new fire station. Other approved items include capital improvements and pay raises to keep the City's staff salaries competitive with other locales. The initiatives deferred Monday were tied to what would have been a new police records clerk and handful of part-time positions, including two more public safety ambassadors, as well as corresponding costs for equipment, vehicles, and the like. From my notebook:

  • The residents and staff of Magnolia Place in Roswell threw a wonderful birthday party for a 9 year old with autism. Austin Sosebee's family took to the public, asking people to send birthday cards so that Austin knew someone was thinking of him on his special day. "When Magnolia Place of Roswell heard his story, they were touched and wanted to do something to make 'him feel extra special.' 'We went up to visit Austin at his home for his birthday,' Shalya Collier said, a sales market specialist. 'We brought him a big yard sign, a birthday cake, and over 65 birthday cards with well-wishes from our residents!'” (11Alive.com WXIA)
  • The Alpharetta Mayors Challenge is next week! "Sign up to run or simply join in on the fun and enjoy beautiful downtown Alpharetta; there's something for the entire family!" • "Several Atlanta firefighters responded to the popular Tin Lizzy's Cantina in Buckhead where a fire caused heavy damage to the building. An exterior wall of the building is completely charred." No one was inside the building at the time of the fire and there are no injuries. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. (Tin Lizzy)
