Here are the top stories today in Alpharetta-Milton:

  1. The Alpharetta Wire & Wood free music festival starts tomorrow! There will be local and regional performers in several locations in downtown Alpharetta playing their original music. Wire & Wood is part of Alpharetta’s initiative to bring more music to the community and to make it “Alpharetta Music City.” There is a kickoff party tonight at the Avalon. (Wire & Wood)
  2. The City of Milton Fire Department is running an event at the Milton Library to help residents learn about fire safety. Attendees can check out a fire engine, learn how to use a fire extinguisher and learn about valuable programs available to residents. For example, residents can have their home evaluated for fire safety. (City of Milton)
  3. The City of Milton is hiring a new public safety ambassador — "an important, valuable opportunity for an unsworn individual to serve the Department and our community." Duties include performing traffic control functions, patrolling areas for suspicious activity and conducting vacation checks when owners are out of town. If you or someone you know is interested, please email a resume and Letter of Interest to recruiter@miltonga.gov. (City of Milton)

From my notebook:

  • Due to the upcoming Alpharetta Wire & Wood Festival, there will be number of road closures in downtown Alpharetta starting today. One section of Main Street will be shut down, as well as Milton Avenue. In addition, parking will be restricted on downtown streets. • The City of Milton will recognize National Hispanic Heritage Month between Sept. 15 and Oct. 15. It is celebrated for two months to recognize many different cultures who come from several different Spanish-speaking places. Certain dates are important for each group, and several of those happen to straddle two months. For example, Sept. 15, is the anniversary of independence for Central American nations such as Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. (City of Milton)

  • October is national breast cancer awareness month. Men can also develop breast cancer; it's estimated that 2,700 will be diagnosed with the disease in 2022 in the United States. For more information on male breast cancer check out the breast cancer research foundation at bcrf.org. (Alpharetta Department of Public Safety via Facebook)
