Here are the top stories in Alpharetta-Milton today:

  1. The Ed Isakson/Alpharetta Family YMCA needs your help for an upcoming event. Its Fall Festival will be held on Oct. 22, and they need volunteers for decorations, greeting guests and running activities. Volunteers register here: https://bit.ly/3fBi58a (if volunteering as family, please register each person individually). (YMCA)
  2. Alpharetta and Milton commuters can expect more traffic heading into Atlanta for the next several months. Starting this month, there will be lane closures around the 400 and I-285 interchange for at least eight months. "Drivers should expect delays, exercise caution, and reduce their speed while traveling through work zones," the GDOT said. (11 Alive)
  3. Negotiations are underway for how to allocate Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) dollars between the cities in Fulton County and the County. There was another "town hall" meeting last week in College Park to discuss the situation. A greater portion going to Fulton County could affect tax rates and services for Alpharetta and Milton. (City of Milton)
  4. Area gas prices increased slightly over the past week due to uncertainty about the impact of Hurricane Ian. "According to the weekly press release from Montrae Waiters, the spokeswoman for AAA – The Auto Club Group, Georgia drivers are now paying an average of $3.17 per gallon for regular unleaded. 'Georgia gas price average saw an uptick at the pumps last week due to the threat of Hurricane Ian,' said Waiters. 'Thankfully, the storm shifted further east away from Georgia’s coastline, causing minimal damage. If demand stays low and crude oil does not increase, gas prices could trend downward this week.'” (Cobb County Courier)

  • The City of Milton needs your help coming up with a name for a new park. It's 21 acres located at Freemanville and Birmingham roads and their goal is to have a name in November. The deadline for name suggestions is soon — Oct. 10. (City of Milton)
  • Non-emergency 911 calls are at an all-time high in Atlanta. Recent calls include a man complaining about a red light being too long, help dealing with a spider and lost eyeglasses. These calls tie up staff who could otherwise be helping out with true emergencies. (11Alive.com WXIA)
  • The Ed Isakson/Alpharetta Family YMCA has a new promotion: "Take advantage of our current membership offer to pay the day in October! Plus, family members get $200 for Y programs in their first year! Join now and save. ymcaatlanta.org/membership" (Ed Isakson/Alpharetta Family YMCA via Facebook)
