Athens Man Dies in Two-Car Collision

A 49-year-old Athens man was killed Monday when his car struck another car stopped at a red light along Tallassee Road, Athens-Clarke County Police said.

Mark Anthony Ellis of Winterberry Lane was driving a 1991 Honda Accord eastbound on Tallasee Road around 5 p.m.  At the intersection of Westchester Drive, the 2011 Nissan Cube driven by Killick Hinds, 40, of Three Oaks Drive was stopped at a red light when it was struck from behind by Ellis' vehicle, police said.

EMS responded and transported Ellis to Athens Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, according to a news release, and Hinds was treated for injuries at the hospital.

The investigation continues, police said.

The road was closed until about 6:15 p.m. Monday.
