CRIME PREVENTION MONTH

The National Crime Prevention Council encourages action during crime prevention month. October has become the official month for recognizing and celebrating the practice of crime prevention, while promoting awareness and creating safer, more caring communities. The month-long celebration spotlights successful crime prevention efforts on the local, state, and national levels.
 
Everyone can do something to prevent crime, from helping police identify crime problems, starting a Neighborhood Watch, or taking common sense steps to protect themselves, their homes, and property. 

If we want to prevent crime, it takes each of us working with citizens, law enforcement, the business community, faith-based groups, and all levels of government. Citizen involvement in crime prevention plays a vital role in helping many communities stay safe. The theme for this year - Partnering with Law Enforcement to Prevent Crime - puts an emphasis on community residents working with law enforcement to reduce the crime. To help people get involved in preventing crime, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department will be promoting and participating in several events throughout the month of October. 
The following events are scheduled: 

• October 9, 2013 – 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM 
Crime Prevention Unit - Distribution of Crime Prevention Resources - 
Downtown Substation – 265 College Ave 

• October 16, 2013 - 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM 
Crime Prevention Unit - Distribution of Crime Prevention Resources - 
West Precinct - Georgia Square Mall, 3700 Atlanta Hwy, Athens 

Citizens are encouraged to attend one of these events and learn how to make our community a safer place to live and work.
