New House Goes Up At University and Pinecrest

Remember the 1950s -era ranch built by Alwin Stiles?

It was torn down from the corner of Pinecrest and UniversityΒ months ago. This new, large house is replacing it at 232 University.

Like other older houses in Five Points and other in-town neighborhoodsΒ slated for demolition, this house saw its demise delayed for 90 days--as the county's demolition ordinance allows.

Athens Clarke CountyΒ Commissioner Kathy Hoard said she is glad Mayor Denson plans to assignΒ the demolition ordinance to the government operations committee next month, "because I'm excited about this opportunity to revisit the ordinance.

"I'm not excited about losing our historic resources, but I am glad we're going to get another bite of the apple. And of course, we will engage the members of the Athens Clarke Heritage Foundation and other community members in the process."
