Three Commissioners Still Balking Over Proposed Ice Rink For Classic Center

The UGA hockey team plans to play at the Classic Center when the ice rink is there.

At their September meeting, theΒ Athens Clarke County Commission voted to approve a proposal from the Classic Center to bring an ice rink and other upgradesΒ to the facility, and to pay for the improvements with $5.4 million in bonds.Β

Now, three commissioners who voted against the proposal,Β Commissioners Allison Wright, Jerry NeSmith and Jared Bailey,Β want to reconsider the idea of covering the ice rink cost with bond money, according to a story in the Athens Banner Herald.Β Wright wants to seek a bond for $4.4 million, saying that $1.1 million in bond money for an ice rink isn't appropriate.

The concerns were aired during Thursday's agenda setting meeting.

NeSmith offered a "commission defined option" for financial restructuring, according to the story. The matter will be considered during the voting October meeting of the commission.
