ATLANTA, GA -- The city council has agreed to a controversial deal with the state of Georgia that will facilitate the sale of Underground Atlanta to a private developer.
The deal came on Monday afternoon, when the council, by a vote of 12-3, agreed to give the historic Bobby Jones Golf Course to the state. In exchange, the city will take possession of a state-owned parking deck next to Underground.
The golf course, which is in Buckhead, will be converted from 18 holes to a 9-hole course.
Underground Atlanta was created in the 1920s, when construction of concrete viaducts elevated the street system one level to permit a better flow of traffic. Merchants moved their operations to the second floor, leaving the old fronts for storage and service.
But over the years, Underground Atlanta became dormant, was reborn in 1989, and now suffers from an image of high crime and other safety concerns.
