Man Shoots Self At ATL Airport, Faces Charges: Police

Police say a man who shot and injured himself in a baggage claim area at the Atlanta airport is facing multiple charges.

ATLANTA, GA — A 59-year-old man is facing charges after police say he shot himself in the arm Sunday in a baggage claim area of the Atlanta airport.

Officers responded around 3:30 p.m. to the shooting in the upper-level baggage claim area of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Atlanta Police said. They found the man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to his left arm, police said.

The man was taken to a hospital for treatment, and during an investigation, police said they determined the man's injury was self-inflicted.

Police identified him as Douglas E. Smith, and said he faces charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and reckless conduct.

After being released from the hospital, police said Smith will be taken to the Clayton County Jail.

Police noted airport operations were not disrupted by the shooting.
