The holiday season is about more than lights and celebrations — it’s also a meaningful time to give back and make a difference right here at home. We’ve rounded up a few organizations in and around Barrow that could use a helping hand this season. This isn’t an all-inclusive list, but a starting point — be sure to contact each group directly to learn about their current needs, requirements and how you can best support their efforts.
Barrow County Habitat for Humanity
Barrow County Habitat for Humanity brings community members together to build simple, affordable homes alongside the families who will live in them—no construction experience required. Volunteers can join build days, assist in the office or serve on committees that support family selection, outreach and training. Time commitments are flexible, ranging from a few hours a month to more regular shifts.

Barrow County School System
The Barrow County School System welcomes those who want to enrich student learning through mentoring, guest speaking, classroom support and field trip assistance. The district offers three volunteer levels, depending on how closely volunteers work with students, with corresponding background check requirements.

Camp Twin Lakes
Camp Twin Lakes provides transformational summer and year-round camp experiences for children with serious illnesses, disabilities and life challenges. Individuals and group volunteers can help with event support, project days, campus beautification and other behind-the-scenes work that keeps the organization’s camps in Winder and Rutledge running.

Food Bank of Northeast Georgia
The Food Bank of Northeast Georgia works to ensure every neighbor has consistent access to nutritious food through distribution programs, donation sorting and community partnerships. Its Athens location—just about a half hour from Barrow County—welcomes volunteers to pack food boxes, sort donations or assist with administrative support.

Leftover Pets
Leftover Pets operates a low-cost spay/neuter clinic and a targeted Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program to reduce shelter euthanasia rates across Barrow and surrounding counties. Volunteers can help trap and transport community cats, support TNR efforts or assist remotely by emailing pet owners about affordable spay/neuter services.

Peace Place International
Peace Place International in Winder supports survivors of domestic violence by providing safe shelter, essential resources and restorative services, with volunteers contributing in meaningful, hands-on ways. Community members can donate in-kind services—from childcare to home maintenance—or help at the organization’s thrift store with sorting, organizing and customer support.

Spirit of Sharing
Spirit of Sharing strengthens families across Barrow and the surrounding area through hot meal distribution, youth leadership programs and its flagship Share the Blessing event on Christmas Day.
