Statham Woman Reports 'Untimely Death' of Eight Chickens and Two Ducks

The deputy dispatched to investigate the incident noticed animal feathers scattered across the yard and "all over" the chicken coop.

Someone or something entered a Statham woman's chicken coop during the early morning hours of Sept. 5 and left a swath of carnage behind.

According to the Barrow County Sheriff's Office incident report, a deputy was dispatched to the Jefferson Road home to investigate the "untimely death of eight chickens and two ducks."

Upon arrival, the deputy notice animal feathers scattered across the front yard and "all over" the chicken coup. The Statham woman said all the animals were fine as of the evening of Sept. 4 and were "all alive and in their coop with the fence tied shut."

The woman told the deputy she did not believe an animal could've untied the fence to gain entry to the coop.

"During the investigation, I did notice numerous paw prints outside the fence in an area of soft ground," the deputy noted. "The prints seem to have come from a large dog."

The woman said she did not own a large dog and, to her knowledge, none of her neighbors did either.

The eight chickens were valued at $10 each and the ducks at $15 each for a total estimated loss of $110.
