Texting While Driving Draws Attention to Wanted Man

A Winder, Ga. man learned the hard way that texting while driving is a bad idea.

Timothy Johnson, 22, of Winder, was passing by the Winder Police Department on Sept. 3 when an officer in the parking lot noticed Johnson appeared to be texting while driving. The officer pulled Johnson over near the intersection of North Jackson and Stephens Street and informed him of the reason for the stop.


"The driver stated that he was using his phone to contact his baby's momma that was in the hospital having a baby right now," the officer wrote in the report.

The officer asked Johnson for his license and Johnson reportedly said he did not have it with him. The officer then asked Johnson to write his name and date of birth on a piece of paper. Johnson provided his real name, but his not his real date of birth -- a deception the officer uncovered while checking Johnson's information in the system.

When the officer ran Johnson through with his correct date of birth, he discovered Johnson had a suspended license and three outstanding warrants for felony probation violation.

At that point, the officer placed Johnson in handcuffs. During a post-arrest search, the officer discovered Johnson had his prison identification card with him. The card had his correct name and date of birth.

Johnson was subsequently transported to the Barrow County Detention Center where he was booked on charges of driving while license suspended, texting while driving and giving a false name and date of birth. The warrants were also confirmed.
