Arrested: Flowery Branch Woman Allegedly Cashed $238K in Fake Checks

Gwinnett Police said she deposited the checks in two area banks, then withdrew the money after the checks cleared.

The woman sought for cashing counterfeit checks worth more than $200,000 in the Peachtree Corners/Norcross area last year has been arrested.

Derona Carol Brown, 62, of Flowery Branch has been arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree forgery, three counts of theft by deception and three counts of false identification documents, Gwinnett Police said in a new release.

Brown is accused of depositing bogus checks for $140,000 at the SunTrust located at 6095 Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Peachtree Corners, and $98,000 at the SunTrust located at 5950 Jimmy Carter Boulevard near Norcross. She allegedly withdrew the money once the check cleared, police said.

The thefts occurred in November and December of 2014.

Brown has been released from the Gwinnett County jail on bond.

Police say media attention to the case resulted in several tips called into investigators, leading to Brown’s arrest.
