Governor, Other Top Names at Georgia GOP Convention

The importance of early childhood education was the topic.

Some big names in the Georgia Republican Party were to be in Athens this weekend for the GOP convention. Scheduled speakers included national Republican strategist Karl Rove and former U.S. Congressman Allen West.

Gov. Nathan Deal and First Lady Sandra Deal spoke to GOP convention delegates about importance of early childhood education during breakfast Saturday. Business meetings were scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.

Also, former Secretary of State Karen Handel arrived on Friday, according to CBS Atlanta.

Handel just threw her name into the race, joining three others on the ballot to fill the seat of Sen. Saxby Chambliss, who is not seeking re-election. Handel lost a GOP primary race for governor in 2010.

"I'm going to run the best race I can and I'm in this to win," Handel said.
