Here are the top five stories today in Canton-Sixes:
- According to Canton police, a kidnapped 13-year-old was rescued from an attempt at sex trafficking during a traffic stop in Cherokee County. An officer stopped a 16-year-old girl this past Wednesday morning after seeing her on a handheld cell phone. Upon closer investigation, detectives found the vehicle had been stolen and was filled with lingerie. Authorities determined the 16-year-old was transporting the 13-year-old across state lines and that the 13-year-old was a victim of human trafficking and kidnapping. (WSB-TV 2)
- Get ready for Downtown Canton's First Friday this upcoming Friday! This First Friday will feature the Emerald Empire Band. The festivities include late-night shopping and open restaurants, a Kid's Zone, Moving Target ATL Axe Throwing, as well as food and beverage vendors along Main Street. The fun starts at 6 p.m. and goes until 10 p.m. See more details at the link. (City of Canton)
- It's almost the 4th of July and that means fireworks! It's important to keep your pets safe during this time as they may get scared and run away or go missing during the festivities. To help, the Cherokee County Animal Shelter is offering free microchipping for local pets. Cherokee residents' pets can get their free microchips Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1015 Univeter Rd 131 Chattin Dr in Canton. Walk-ins are welcome; be sure pets are on a leash or in a secure carrier. (Cherokee County, Georgia via Facebook)
- The Rotary Club of Canton is celebrating its past year of accomplishments and the appointment of a new president. Greg Elder, vice president of client services for MUST Ministries, has served as club president for the past year and is handing the gavel over to longtime Rotarian, Nicole Lawson. The Rotary Club is Cherokee County's oldest civic club that meets at noon on Tuesdays at the Northside Cherokee Conference Center at 1130 Bluffs Parkway. Members learn how they can support their community while participating in service projects, and enjoying networking and fellowship. (Cherokee Tribune Ledger News)
- Cobb family, friends, and community members said farewell to Sandy White, a philanthropic local behind the Wellstar volunteer program after her passing on Jun. 10. White was buried at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton this past Thursday. "She basically built that hospital," said White's son, Kevin. "She raised money for all those hospitals to be built. She also helped other foundations with their fundraising and building. She was instrumental."(Yahoo! / Marietta Daily Journal)

These free, peer-run telephone lines connect callers with clinically supervised and trained mental health advocates, including social workers, who provide emotional support.
