Here are the top four stories in Canton-Sixes today:

  1. The Mayor and Council of the City of Canton adopted a resolution to keep the control of design standards, development fees, zoning regulations and development moratorium decisions with the local government. House Bills 514 and 517 are at the State Capitol aiming to flip the power and control of those decisions over to the state, also eliminating the public input process enjoyed currently. The resolution will be sent to the local delegation, while Canton Mayor Bill Grant states that he encourages "citizens to contact their local legislators and join us in our resolution that opposes these misguided bills." (Canton News)
  2. The Canton City Council met on Thursday and discussed the rezoning and development of a 14.36 acre, mostly undeveloped, piece of land on Prominence Point Parkway. The developer is planning a 114-unit townhome development on the plot and the public voiced concerns during the Council meeting, to include the proximity to an apartment complex currently in the construction phase and the placement of the planned storm water management ponds. 3. The Cherokee Sheriff's Office is asking the public for help in identifying three people possibly involved in a shoplifting incident on January 10 in Acworth. The three were captured on camera in the CosmoProf store at 6199 Highway 92. If you recognize the three or have information about their whereabouts or the incident, please contact the Sheriff's Office at 770-928-0239 or 9-1-1 regarding Case #SO23-000456. (Cherokee Sheriff's Office via Facebook)
  4. Cherokee County Animal Shelter is holding its weekly adoption event today, and all pets six months and older are free to adopt. The available animals can be seen online here. A QR code at the front door of the shelter will become active at a random time around 10 a.m., please scan the QR code to enter the "virtual line." The shelter adopts on a first come, first served basis and animals can't be put on hold. All animals will go home with their spay or neuter, heartworm and leukemia testing, initial vaccinations, deworming, flea preventative and microchipping complete.
