Here are the top stories today in Canton-Sixes:
- A Georgia Department of Natural Resources Air Quality Alert has been posted by Woodstock Fire & Rescue. Our area is rated a Code Orange for today, with prolonged exposure considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. The air quality is likely to be unhealthy for children, those sensitive to ozone and those with heart or lung disease. Be sure to limit your outdoor activities if you fall into one of the sensitive groups. You can check the air quality on the official U.S. Air Quality Index website here. - Cherokee County officials have posted a reminder that the deadline to file an appeal for your property assessment is June 29. The free process can be done online on the tax assessors office website here, just click on "file appeal." You'll be able to view your property's current information, compare other properties in the area or appeal the property assessment completed for your property. The system will take you through the process, though anyone with a question about the appeals process can call 678-493-6120. (Cherokee County via Facebook)
- The next "Hear, Here" talk at History Cherokee will be held on June 13. These events tend to fill up quickly, so be sure to sign up soon if you'd like to attend. The event, "Hear, Here: The Preservation of Native American History and Heritage with Leslie Thomas," is free. Leslie Thomas has been a member of the Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association for over 20 years and has served as the communications director, vice president and current president of the organization.
