Here are the top five stories today in Canton-Sixes:

  1. Starting this week, motorists across Cherokee County should expect delays and possible road closures as two different resurfacing projects begin. Phase 2 of the 2022 Resurfacing Project began Monday and will affect Creekside Estates, Middlebrooke, Lovinggood Landing, BridgeMill, Sturbridge, and Eagle Watch subdivisions. According to the roadway project manager, resurfacing typically takes two weeks per road. (Cherokeega.com)
  2. The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners, city mayors, and council members reached an agreement about the distribution of revenue from penny sale tax in Cherokee County. The agreement depends on whether the sales tax is extended by voters for the 2024-2030 period. The unanimous agreement was to divide the revenue in accordance with the 2022 Census population numbers. 3. The Canton Police Department is asking for help in identifying the individuals in this photo as they are wanted for questioning related to a theft that occurred at 5 Below. A cell phone was reported as stolen. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Canton City Police Department. (Canton City Police via Facebook)
  4. In the wake of the Supreme Court's ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, abortion services are still available throughout the state of Georgia while the "Heartbeat Bill" (House Bill 481) waits on a ruling. If passed, this bill will outlaw abortion at the point when a fetal heartbeat can be detected, typically at the sixth week of pregnancy. Exceptions include the mother's life being in danger or in cases of a medical emergency. However, abortion services are still available and can be accessed if needed as the bill is still on hold. 5. For parents looking for a date night, consider Parents' Night Out at Liberty Hill Church at The Mill. The church provides safe supervision with activities, supper, and snacks for children from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Parents can take advantage of this for $10 per child and then use the complimentary shuttle to head to downtown Canton for First Friday. Registration can be done here. (Facebook Events)
