Cherokee HS Students Place In National Welding Competition

The students of Cherokee HS Welding class placed in the national competition and earned scholarships that ranged from $500 to $9K.

From Cherokee High School: Cherokee High School welding students placed in National competition and earned scholarships.

Students from the school’s popular and successful welding program competed at the National High School Senior Welding Competition hosted by Tulsa Welding School in Jacksonville, Fla.

Grant Blalock, Eric Cochran, Jack Elwell, Ed Herrera, Jacob Little and Damon Sheffield competed against 200 students from across the country.

Ed Herrera placed second and won a $9,000 scholarship to continue his welding education, along with other prizes such as welding equipment, a welding hood and other tools. Jacob Little placed 12th and was awarded a $1,000 scholarship, as well as a new welding hood and tools. Each of the eight students earned a $500 award for their efforts.

“I am super proud of these students,” teacher Carter Woodall said. “These students put out 110% effort every day to learn these skills, and this shows how it can pay off.”
