🌱 Cherokee School Board's $706M Budget + CCSD Grads Get $1K From ABM

Here are the top five stories in Canton-Sixes today:

  1. The Cherokee School Board passed a $706 million budget that includes employee raises and more teacher hires. The budget also includes funding for replacement schools at Free Home Elementary School and Cherokee High School. Clark Menard, school board member, relayed the board's hope to keep up with inflation and prevent economic downturn. (Cherokee Tribune LedgerNews)
  2. Six Cherokee County School District (CCSD) graduates earned $1K scholarships from ABM Industry Groups, LLC. The students were chosen by a scholarship committee comprised of retired CCSD educators and ABM representatives. The committee evaluated students' involvement in school and community activities and service, personal essays, and references. (Cherokee Tribune Ledger News)
  3. Dr. Jim Wheeler of Family Practice Center has been named a Top Doctor in Atlanta in the field of Family Medicine by Atlanta Magazine. Dr. Wheeler founded the practice in 1979 and currently serves as CEO and medical director. According to a press release, he is active in many philanthropic endeavors and believes in using his platform and medical experience to "give back to those who are most in need." Family Practice Center has four locations in the metro Atlanta area, including one in Canton at 1521 Hickory Flat Hwy. (Longview News-Journal)
  4. A special meeting has been called in Cherokee County to discuss the 2024 version of the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) in the county. The meeting will be held on June 22 at 6 p.m. at the Cherokee County Admin Complex. Topics include sales tax collections, distribution of collections and possible projects for inclusion in a referendum to renew the current SPLOST Program. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)
  5. The Sequoyah Regional Library System will be forgiving most library fines through the month of July to promote their summer reading program, 'Oceans of Possibilities.' Library staff are available to discuss the details. In addition to fine forgiveness, Sequoyah libraries will be holding activities for all ages throughout the month. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)
