Creekview Educator Named To Teacher Advisory Council

CANTON, GA — A Cherokee County School District educator has been tapped to serve on the State School Superintendent’s Teacher Advisory Council. Andrea Sheldon, an American Sign Language teacher at Creekview High School, is among a group of teachers from across Georgia selected to represent their profession on the board.

The Council meets twice a year to advise State Schools Superintendent Dr. Richard Woods on education issues, and provide him insight as to how those decisions impact classroom teachers and instruction.

“We’re very proud one of our teachers has earned a seat at this important table,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian Hightower said. “We know Andrea will be an outstanding advocate on behalf of educators and the students we serve.”

Sheldon started the ASL program at Creekview six years ago. Since joining CCSD in 2007 she also has served as a teacher of the deaf and ASL teacher at Hasty Elementary School Fine Arts Academy and as an educational interpreter.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in ASL and her master’s degree in teaching and special education, and has served as a member of the Georgia Professional Standards Committee to analyze passing scores for ASL teachers.

Sheldon will be recognized by the Cherokee County School Board and Superintendent of Schools at the School Board’s Nov. 15 meeting.
