Here are the top five stories today in Canton-Sixes:

  1. On Oct. 18, the Cherokee County Domestic Violence Task Force and Cherokee Family Violence Center will cohost a candlelight vigil honoring victims and survivors of domestic violence. The ceremony will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the gazebo in Cannon Park, with a resource fair opening at 5:00 p.m. During the vigil, guest speakers and survivors will share their stories and the names of the 161 Georgians who lost their lives to domestic violence last year will be read aloud.   2. Cherokee County Senior Services has launched its annual "Adopt a Senior" program, which strives to spread holiday cheer to local seniors. This year's requested gift items include grocery store gift cards, stamp booklets, bedsheets, and other non-perishable items.   3. The annual Cherokee County Fair kicked off on Tuesday at the Cherokee County Fairgrounds in Canton, featuring carnival rides, community displays, and live music every night. Admission is $5 or free for children under 10 and seniors over 65.   4. During the Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, Cherokee County leaders proclaimed Oct. 9 to 15 as Fire Prevention Week. During this week, citizens are urged to plan and practice a home fire escape.
