Driver Killed, Boy Injured In 2-Car Accident

Four people, including a five-year-old child, were injured in the Dec. 20 accident on Ga. 20/Cumming Highway in Cherokee County.

CANTON, GA — A 60-year-old man died and four people, including a child, were injured Thursday afternoon in a two-vehicle accident on Cumming Highway in Cherokee County. Deputies with the Cherokee Sheriff's Office were dispatched around 5:45 p.m. Dec. 20 to the collision on Ga. 20 near Shady Lane in the Macedonia community east of Canton.

According to the agency, a pickup truck carrying four people was traveling westbound on Ga. 20 and stopped to make a left turn into a driveway when a van rear-ended the vehicle.

Robert Norton, 60, of Ball Ground, the driver of the van, was transported to Northside Hospital Cherokee where he died of his injuries, said Sheriff's Office spokesperson Jay Baker. There were no passengers inside the van.

The driver of the truck, 26-year-old Jonathan Franklin of Canton, was transported to Northside Cherokee with non-life threatening injuries. Passenger Brittany Franklin, 26, also of Canton, was transported to Northside Cherokee with non-life threatening injuries.

Two additional passengers, Canton resident Jacob Franklin, 30, and a 5-year-old boy, were transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Baker said the accident is under investigation by the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office Traffic Enforcement Unit. Preliminary indications are that speed and weather conditions were contributing factors in the accident.
