Here are the top four stories today in Canton-Sixes:
- Thanks to Habitat for Humanity of North Central Georgia, the Cherokee County Homeless Veterans Program (CCHVP) and the Johns Creek Veterans Association (JCVA), local veteran homeowners are eligible for home repairs through the 2023 Veteran Home Repair Program. Repairs can be major or minor and include things like HVAC replacements, plumbing and electric work, roofing, mobility ramps and much more. To apply for the repair program or to volunteer your time to help local veterans, please reach out to Jim Lindenmayer (CCHVP) at jlindenmayer80@gmail.com or Keith Bogle (JCVA) at kbogle@bellsouth.net. - Giving blood is a very important service, if you're eligible, please consider donating at an upcoming blood drive. You or someone you love has likely needed and was able to get donor blood during surgery or after an accident, it's not just for emergencies and shortages do happen from time to time. There are two American Red Cross Community Blood Drives coming up this week for you to donate at. As a bonus, donors will receive a $10 prepaid Visa card and will be entered to win a $3,000 prepaid Visa card. The first drive is today from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 11905 Highway 92 in Woodstock. Then, on Friday from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., there's a drive at the R.T. Jones Memorial Library, located at 116 Brown Industrial Parkway. You can make an appointment for either drive at the link. (American Red Cross)
- The Canton Police Department has some tips for us on how to avoid motor vehicle accidents due to absent or malfunctioning lights. When traffic lights are out completely or blinking, it's hard sometimes to remember who has the right of way. If a light is flashing red, it is treated as a stop sign. You must come to a complete stop and proceed once it's clear to do so. If a light is flashing yellow, it means "caution" and it is used to warn drivers to proceed with caution, traffic may or may not be coming. If there is no signal at all, the intersection is treated like a 4-way stop. You must come to a complete stop and then proceed once it's your turn, using the rules for right of way. - The Northside Hospital Foundation's Easter Eggstravaganza Easter Egg Hunt is back again this year, and will be held at Etowah River Park, at 600 Brown Industrial Parkway. The annual event features a petting zoo, carnival games, Easter egg hunts, snacks, music and more. The event will be held on April 1, though if it rains, the event will not be rescheduled. Guests are asked to bring donations to the event, and they're asking for diapers, wipes and baby food for MUST Ministries, there will be collection bins at the event. Monetary donations can be made online or in person at the check-in table. Please see the listing for the egg hunt times and more details. (Canton Events)
