Here are the top five stories in Canton-Sixes today:

  1. If you're a college student looking for an internship this summer, the Cherokee County Community Development Agency may have an opportunity for you. The part-time internship is a paid position and the student will be helping to develop Cherokee County's Accessory Dwelling Unit ordinance. The perfect fit will be a graduate student pursuing a master's degree in public administration, planning, architecture or public policy and will have an interest in working with the local government. The intern will work up to 29 hours a week from roughly June 1 to August 11. Please see further details at the link, including information on applying. (Cherokee County Communications Division)
  2. Student members of the Etowah High School's HOSA Future Health Professionals chapter won first place in the HOSA state competition this month. The team's win was for a public service announcement they created to highlight mental health awareness, which you can see here. They'll now head to the HOSA International Leadership Conference in Texas this summer to compete at the national level. They will be recognized for their win by the Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower in a future school board meeting. Congratulations team! (CCSD News)
  3. Northside Cherokee has a very interesting and informative display this week at the hospital. To shed light on the need for colorectal cancer screening and in conjunction with National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, the hospital is displaying a giant, walk-through colon showing various health conditions as you make your way through. It is suggested that anyone over the age of 45 should be screening for cancer regularly as part of their health routine. You can read more about the hospital's colorectal cancer program here. Be sure to talk to your primary care physician about any concerns and get your screening scheduled! (Subscription: Cherokee Tribune & Ledger-News)
