Here are the top five stories in Canton-Sixes today:

  1. The Cherokee County 911 Center has a new office dog. Ruby's new home is the center and the employees are her family. The center operates 24 hours a day while answering 450,000 calls. Ruby, a rescue dog, provides a much-needed mood boost for the employees. Every 911 Center in the county needs a Ruby, according to the employees. (Fox 5 Atlanta)
  2. Starting today, River Green Avenue will be temporarily closing some lanes. The closures are necessary while the road undergoes traffic and utility improvements. Crews will be extending the left turn lane onto Knox Bridge Highway while installing stormwater and sewer improvements. The closures could last up to eight weeks. (City of Canton)
  3. Cherokee County is offering Babysitting and Pediatric CPR Training on Saturday, Oct. 1. The class will be teaching participants the basics of child behavior, CPR, and first aid. The class is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Cherokee Veterans Park on Cumming Highway in Canton. The class is meant for children between the ages of 11 and 15. There is a $99 fee for the class. (Cherokee County)
  4. Cherokee County's last Unwind Wednesday event of 2022 is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 5. This free event will be from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Cherokee Veterans Park in Canton. There will be food trucks, vendors, and music at the event. Click for more information. (Cherokee County)
  5. The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office responded to a possible fight at Tumeby's Taproom minutes before a shooting occurred in the area of 720 North Granard Street. The Gaffney Police Department is leading the investigation into the shooting that resulted in one individual sustaining non-life-threatening injuries and a damaged city sign. The investigation is currently in its early stages, but witness statements indicate that gunfire was exchanged between the victim's car and another sedan traveling between Tumeby's Taproom and Granard Street.
