Here are the top stories in Canton-Sixes today:

  1. Firefighters from Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services (CCFES) volunteered recently at Camp Oo-U-La, a Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation (GFBF) camp in Winder. The week-long sleepaway camp is for children ages 7-17 who have had burn injuries, and activities including swimming, horseback riding, archery and rock climbing. The volunteers at the camp are mainly firefighters, medical professionals and adult burn survivors, and the camp helps support children by "acknowledging, honoring and validating their experiences." (CCFES News)
  2. Cherokee County Recreation & Parks held a countywide Recreation Summit last week, calling county organizations to "come together, collaborate, educate and have fun," as they discussed park projects from around the area. Updates were given on current park projects and the SPLOST and Impacts Fees funding them, including the progression of the master plan development for the Hickory Flat Area Park in Canton. The announcement was also made that the county and cities within are working on the development of a county-wide trail plan, aimed at the expansion and connection of city trails. (Cherokee County Communications Division)
  3. Tomorrow is the "World's Largest Swim Lesson" at the Cherokee County Aquatic Center. The worldwide event will be happening at hundreds of other aquatic centers, swimming schools and water parks, too. The lesson will teach participants about water safety, you can learn more here. The event will start at noon, and participants will need to pay admission into The Oasis, the center's outdoor pool area. (Cherokee County Communications Division)
