Here are the top five stories in the Canton and Sixes areas today:
- Canton's Historic Preservation Commission unanimously approved design plans for a new 280-unit apartment complex during a meeting on Tuesday. The apartment complex and parking deck will be built north of The Mill on Etowah, replacing the former Thomas Concrete mixing plant. It will feature a mix of studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom units, with monthly rent expected to range from $1,200 to $2,400. (Cherokee Tribune & Ledger-News)
- Thirty-five teachers and staff members with the Cherokee County School District have been named to the 2022-23 class of Microsoft Innovative Educator Experts (MIEE). The CCSD team members belong to a cohort of only 830 educators and school district leaders nationwide who received this elite recognition. The honorees will receive access to new instructional resources and be recognized by the school board at the October School Board meeting. (Cherokee County School District)
- Registration is now open for the virtual ESports fall league at the YMCA of Cherokee County. Opportunities are available for gamers ages 8 to 18, who will be grouped into versus teams once they are in the league. Games featured in the fall league include Super Smash Bros. - A 19-year-old Cherokee County athlete has been selected to participate in the Special Olympics World Games in Germany next year. Caleb Guy of nearby Ball Ground will represent the United States in the competition's kayaking event. Guy has been involved with Special Olympics for 11 years, but he only began kayaking last year when Cherokee County Special Olympics first began offering the sport. (Cherokee Tribune & Ledger-News)
