Here are the top stories today in Canton-Sixes:

  1. The Sixes Elementary School celebrated student and staff accomplishments as one big Star Family on Friday. They had a special send-off for our Star Special Olympians as they went to the CCSD Special Olympics at RRHS and the day ended with an Atlantis carnival and Shine Time with our Star Pals for other flight missions. (Facebook)
  2. A Cherokee County narcotics commander faces DUI charges. John New, 47, was arrested on Sept. 24 in Pickens County after the Georgia State Patrol responded to the scene of the crash. New reportedly refused to answer any questions or undergo any evaluations, leading him to be arrested as required by Georgia law. While New was being taken into custody, the trooper searched him and found two CMANS challenge coins. (AJC.com)
  3. A retired Canton police officer and his wife are among many victims in Florida who lost everything to Hurricane Ian. Moving to Fort Myers was supposed to be a fresh start after Scott Hoffman’s retirement and the sudden loss of both Deva’s mother and their son in 2019. Neighbors and friends in Canton are also stepping in to help. One friend has started a GoFundMe for the couple. The Canton Police Department said officers are also making donations to the family separate from the GoFundMe. (Fox 5)
  4. Nearly 160 runners registered for Cherokee Family Violence Center's 5th Annual Tina’s Cat Run this weekend. The event took place at the nearby Ball Ground Community Center on Saturday, Oct. 15. The organization thanked all who came out to support domestic violence shelters serving Pickens and Cherokee County. (Cherokee Family Violence Center via Facebook)
  5. There are five new properties for sale in Canton. If you're looking for a residence in the area, stop by some of the new properties available — including a home with 4 beds and 4 baths for $444,900, and another with 8 beds and 7 baths for $1.7 million. (Canton-Sixes Patch)
