Here are the top five stories today in Canton-Sixes:

  1. A Canton local shared the top spot at the U.S. Amateur golf qualifier. Dalton State’s Steve Kibare of Canton and Georgia Tech’s Bartley Forrester of Gainesville were recent co-medalists at the first U.S. Amateur qualifier held at The Standard Club in Johns Creek. The two golfers shot 8-under 136 to claim their spots at the 122nd U.S. Amateur, Aug. 15 to 21, at The Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, N.J. ( The Atlanta Journal Constitution)
  2. The holiday weekend is almost here, and there's plenty to do in Cherokee County to celebrate Independence Day! On Saturday, Jul. 2, enjoy the Canton Independence Day and Parade and Fireworks and the Woodstock Star Spangled Pub Crawl. On Sunday, July 3, the First Baptist Church of Woodstock Community Party invites Canton-Sixes area residents to attend its free community party from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., or you can travel to Woodstock for Woodstock’s All-Day July 4th Spectacular Festival.   3. New open houses are ready for you to discover this week in Canton-Sixes. During the upcoming long weekend, visit two of the new open houses available in the area — one on Saturday for a 2,970 sq. ft., 5 bed, 2.5 bath home on Harmony Drive, and another on Sunday for a 2,916 sq. ft., 5 bed, 3 bath residence on Blankets Creek Drive.   4. All Sequoyah Regional Library System locations will be closed on Jul. 4 in observance of Independence Day. In addition, the Pickens Grab & Go location in Jasper will be closed on Saturday, Jul. 2 to accommodate higher levels of traffic. (Sequoyah Regional Library)
  5. The Cherokee County School District is offering a to-go meal service at no charge during summer break for any child up to age 18 in Cherokee County. With the exception of Monday, Jul. 4, families will have pickups on Mondays. The next pick-up after July 4 will be from 11 a.m. to noon on Monday, Jul. 11, at Cherokee High School’s North Campus. The program had a jammed-pack day full of learning yesterday, including several important topics: Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE), Domestic Violence, Use of Force, and much more.   • Cherokee Tribune & Ledger-News reported that the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office has increased its pay for sworn positions by nearly 20 percent, making the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office one of the leading sheriff’s offices in the metro area for law enforcement pay.
