- The City of Canton is holding a Public Input Meeting next month regarding the addition of a new crosswalk on East Main Street. Meeting speakers will include members of the city government and their consultation team, and they'd like to hear your thoughts. The meeting will be held in the City Hall Auditorium on July 6 at 5 p.m., but if you can't make it, you can input with Bethany Watson by email at bethany.watson@cantonga.gov or by phone at 770-704-1521. - The annual Canton Farmers Market Pie Contest is coming up on Saturday, July 15. If you'd like to share your joy of baking, you can grab an application at Canton City Hall or online here. Your pie must contain at least one ingredient that is normally found at a Georgia farmers market, and it can be sweet, savory, hot or cold. Only one pie per entrant, and the creations will be judged on presentation, taste, creative use of ingredients and the recipe itself. The first-place winner will proceed to the Cherokee Pie Finals in Woodstock on Aug. 19. (Canton Farmers Market via Facebook)
- Temperatures are rising in our area, and it's time to think about the dangers of and precautions against heat exhaustion and heat stroke. For today and tomorrow, there's a potential of 105-degree temps or higher, with the heat index. It's important for people and pets to hydrate and cool down often, and always check, then double check, backseats and trunk areas for children or pets before walking away from a car. Heat exhaustion symptoms include dizziness, nausea and weakness, while confusion, headaches and the loss of consciousness are signs of heat stroke. If you suspect either, reach out for medical help. (Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services via Facebook)
- After several black bear sightings in the area earlier this month, there have been more reported to Cherokee County E 9-1-1 in the last few days. This time around, bears were spotted in the area of Stringer Road in Hickory Flat and near Highway 92 in Woodstock. The Department of Natural Resources asks that county residents remove birdfeeders, trash, grills and pet food bowls from outdoor areas while the bear are presumably moving through the county. You can read more about bear safety and deterrents here. Do not approach the bear and keep a watchful eye on pets and children while they're outside. (Cherokee County E 9-1-1 via Facebook)
