Here are the top 5 stories today in Canton-Sixes:

  1. The food pantry at Reinhardt University is slated to get a major upgrade that will provide safe, secure, 24/7 card access for students. Funding for the upgrade comes from United Methodist Church Global Ministries, which recently awarded the university a $10,000 on-campus insecurities grant. Other upgrades to the food pantry will include increased storage space, air conditioning, and the addition of critical hygiene products, food preparation, and auxiliary items. (Cherokee Tribune & Ledger-News)
  2. A Cherokee County woman has accused a dog sitter she hired of neglect that led to the death of one of her dogs. Brittany Leonard of Canton says that despite paying the sitter $1,000 to watch her three Pomeranians while on vacation, she returned to find one dead and the others "fighting for their lives" from a lack of food and water. The sitter, Catherine Yates, has denied the allegations. Cherokee County Animal Control is currently investigating the incident. (95.5. WSB)
  3. Safe Kids Cherokee County recently partnered with the Atlanta Area Council Boy Scouts of America to provide a Life Jacket Loaner Station at the Camp Allatoona Aquatics Base Camp. The station reminds scouts to wear a life jacket in the water and makes the safety devices easily accessible during the camping season. Check out the link to see a photo from the installation, where Lead Ranger Chris Purvis and mascot Buddy Beaver were on site to encourage water and boating safety to young scouts. 4. The Cherokee County Animal Shelter issued a reminder to animal owners about the importance of regularly updating their pet's microchip information. For pets that do not currently have a microchip, the shelter provides the service for free to help prevent pets from becoming lost or stolen. Stop by the shelter Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to have your pet microchipped. No appointment is necessary. (Cherokee County Animal Shelter via Facebook)
