Sequoyah Teacher Earns 2018 Yale Educator Award

CANTON, GA — A Cherokee County School District teacher has earned a top educator honor presented by Yale University. Matt Bartula of Sequoyah High School has won the 2018 Yale Educator Award, and is one of only 59 teachers worldwide to be honored.

The Award recognizes outstanding educators from around the world “who support and inspire their students to perform at high levels and to achieve excellence long before they attend Yale,” according to the University.

Nearly 400 nominations were submitted by students entering Yale's class of 2022; a University committee reviewed each nomination to select honorees. Bartula, who began teaching 20 years ago, was nominated by Yale freshman and class of 2018 Sequoyah High School graduate Caleb Crayton.

Bartula teaches Advanced Placement World History and AP Human Geography, and was named the school’s Teacher of the Year in 2015. An accomplished speech and debate coach, Bartula has led the school’s team to national recognition.

The educator will be recognized by the Cherokee County School Board and Superintendent Dr. Brian Hightower at the board's Oct. 18 meeting.
