- Each of the high schools in the Cherokee County School District received a commendation from the Georgia Department of Education for the 13th year in a row. Each school was named a 2023 AP Honor School for their exceptional participation and performance on student Advanced Placement (AP) exams, the honor includes several categories. All CCSD high schools were recognized in the AP STEM category and Cherokee, Creekview, Etowah, River Ridge and Sequoyah were recognized in the AP Humanities category and were named as AP Humanities Achievement Schools. Creekview, Etowah, River Ridge, Sequoyah and Woodstock were named as AP Schools of Distinction. Students enrolled in AP classes earn credit towards college courses. (CCSD News)
- The Cherokee County School Board approved the construction of the replacement Free Home Elementary School. At the meeting last week, several leaders were also appointed for the 2023-24 school year while others are stepping away. The new school is needed due to work on Highway 20 bordering the school, and construction will run around $36 million and is projected to be complete around August 2025. Dr. Catherine Head, curriculum support coordinator for math, will be retiring and Stephanie Norris, assistant principal at River Ridge, will step into that vacated role. Greg Mason, the district's maintenance supervisor, is retiring and Matthew Walker, currently a maintenance coordinator, will fill that role. Christy Rich, principal of Macedonia Elementary, is also retiring and the replacement will be named in the board's March meeting. (CCSD News)
- The CCSD School Nutrition Program was named as a USDA National Silver Award Winner for their 2022 summer meal program. This is the second time the district received the honor, and it’s one of only 98 districts in the country to receive it. The summer food program is funded by the USDA and donations and provides free meals to all Cherokee County children in need in the summer when school is on break. During the 2022 summer break, even children not enrolled were offered the weekly bags of food, milk and juices. (CCSD News)
