- The request to build a special events facility on 16.76 acres of land on Cumming Highway near Hopewell Road has been withdrawn after the recommended denial from the planning commission. Allowing the application withdrawn without prejudice, the board will allow the applicant to come back with another plan for the area within the next year. It was a tough sell, there were concerns from citizens about noise, sewage, traffic and general quality of life from the beginning. Also rejected by the Board of Commissioners were plans for another Dollar General, this one at Fincher Road and Upper Burris Road. (Subscription: Cherokee Tribune & Ledger-News)
- Cherokee County Board of Education Vice Chair and District 4 member Robert Rechsteiner was allegedly involved in the harassment of a transgendered person at WrestleCon in Los Angeles. Rechsteiner, who wrestling fans may know as WCW's Rick Steiner, is being accused of transphobia after allegedly calling Impact Wrestling's Gisele Shaw a "piece of trash and filth" during a signing event with fans in attendance. The powers that be at the wrestling event apologized publicly, admonished the statements reportedly made towards Shaw and banned Rechsteiner from the event. Rechsteiner has served on our school board since 2006, winning a fifth term in 2022. (WSB-TV)
- The Sequoyah Regional Library System's "Spring Into The Library" campaign has offered the area some super fun events, like the Mini Flower Pot Painting and Nature Walk earlier in the week. Coming up today is the DIY Seed Balls for Bees class. It’s the last offering in the celebration series. For the book lovers, though, the associated Beanstack Reading Challenge isn't tying up until April 15. You can find more information about today's class at the link. - The Cherokee County Elections and Voter Registration has a new home, moving away from the office on Marietta Highway in Canton. Still in Canton, the department has moved over to 193 Lamar Haley Parkway, where the Division of Family and Children Services used to be, and it’s open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. The new building is larger, and as the law requires, has more space for viewing areas, parking and storage. You can learn about what the department does on the official website here, it has a lot of information on voting dates and practices. Via the website, you can also register to vote, check your registration, change your information or cancel your voter registration. Leading up to and during election times, you can also find legal notices, election results and information on parties, candidates and open records requests.
