- The heat doesn't seem to be going anywhere soon, and there may be storms leading up to the holiday next week. Not only will it be hot today and through the weekend, but there is also a "marginal risk" that we will have severe thunderstorms today and a "slight risk" that they'll come tomorrow. Stay cool, inside in the air conditioning and well hydrated, use your sunscreen and keep your eye on news outlets for storm- or heat-related alerts. (Cherokee County Emergency Management)
- We discussed the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke in humans yesterday, but what about animals? Symptoms of heat stroke in animals include heavy panting, excessive drooling and a racing heartbeat, while worsening symptoms can include vomiting, seizures, staggering and collapsing. Help keep your pets safe by restricting their activities in hot weather, keeping them in shaded and ventilated areas when not inside the home, keeping cool drinking water where they can get to it and by never leaving them in a vehicle. If you think your pet is experiencing heat stroke, contact your veterinarian immediately. (Cherokee County Animal Shelter via Facebook)
- July is National Parks and Recreation Month, and in celebration, Cherokee Recreation & Parks has created a calendar packed full of daily happenings, activities and games designed to help get us up and outside. There are items for all ages, and there's even an interactive social media campaign with a grand prize up for grabs. On Sunday, you can enjoy some free rock climbing over at The Buzz, at 7345 Cumming Highway. Other events on the calendar include flying a kite at Cherokee Veterans Park, giving Open Gym a try at The Buzz and swimming at the Aquatic Center. You can find the full calendar at the link.
