  1. If your child is at risk of not being promoted to the next grade until they retake a class or two, the Cherokee County School District is offering summer school from June 5 - 23. Rising ninth-graders and high school students have many options in courses, including personal fitness and health classes, but please note, the registration window opens on April 24 and closes on May 26. Credit recovery courses will be offered at all high schools in the district, and attendance is mandatory once registered. If you'd like more information, you can read through the official CCSD website here or reach out to your child's school counselor. (CCSD via Facebook)
  2. The Canton Police Department posted a good bit of advice to all those with young children. To ready your child for an emergency, be sure to teach them about 9-1-1. Recalling information can be difficult for a child in the best of times, but in a crisis, it can be even harder for them to remember what to do. They should know how to decipher what is and what is not considered an emergency, be able to recite their name and address (bonus for knowing phone numbers) and know how to handle a call to 9-1-1, including the importance of staying on the line until told otherwise by the operator. (Canton PD via Facebook)
  3. The Cherokee County Animal Shelter has posted a three-step process that could prove invaluable if you find yourself searching for a lost pet. First and foremost, visit the animal shelter daily, or as often as you can, to check for your pet in person. Second, make sure your pet's microchip information is up to date, if your pet doesn't have one, please know that the shelter offers free, walk-in microchipping. The third thing you'll want to do is fill out a Lost & Found form on the shelter's website here. If you have one, you can also send a picture to the shelter by message on their Facebook page or by email at shelterfriends@gmail.com. (Cherokee County Animal Shelter via Facebook)
  4. Fencing isn't just for the fancy, it could really come in handy in certain situations. If you've thought about learning the sport or just want to fine-tune your Inigo Montoya impression, Cherokee Recreation & Parks offers fencing classes that are just perfect for you. The class for kids aged 8 - 12 and the class for teens and adults both start up on May 3 and will meet on Wednesdays. The younger set will practice from 6 - 6:55 p.m. and the older crew will get their turn from 7 - 7:55 p.m., classes are to be held at The WREC, 7545 Main Street, Building 200 in Woodstock. You can register here. (Cherokee Recreation & Parks via Facebook)
