Here are the top five stories in Canton-Sixes today:

  1. Forecasters reported that a hazardous weather outlook is in effect for Cherokee County over the Fourth of July weekend. There will be thunderstorms, strong to damaging winds, and frequent lightning this weekend until Monday night. (Georgia Patch)
  2. Yesterday, Jul. 1, Gov. Brian Kemp signed an executive order to extend the suspension of Georgia state gas taxes. Instead of expiring on Jul. 14, the gas tax suspension will expire on Aug. 13. According to GasBudy, the average price of a gallon of regular on Jul. 1 was $4.50 in Fulton County. (Georgia Patch)
  3. Canton nurse Judy Dobson retired after 48 years consecutive years of service. Judy graduated from Cherokee High School in 1971, attended a nursing program, and in 1974 began working at R.T. Jones Memorial Hospital in Canton. She has been the clinical coordinator at Medical Associates of North Georgia most recently. Judy said she will miss nursing but she is looking forward to spending more time with her husband and family. Her daughter, April Turner, said her mom is "a true Canton native."   4. The Cherokee County Health Department will host a Back to School Health Clinic to get children up-to-date for school health requirements. The clinic will be at the Canton health center from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Jul. 19, Jul. 26, and Aug. 2. (Cherokee Tribune Ledger News)
  5. Former Atlanta Braves player Larry “Chipper” Jones has listed his Canton estate for $15 million. The estate is roughly 37 acres, has eight bedrooms, and the home is roughly 23,000 square feet. According to property records, Jones paid $9.25 million for the house in 2018. (The Wall Street Journal)
